Sal’s 2013 NHL Predictions

All is right with the world once again

All is right with the world once again

How many of you fellow Canadians plan on boycotting watching hockey this weekend? Yeah that’s what I thought…you’re all weak…weak I say. I’m probably the weakest of them all so I shouldn’t really talk. The start of a season means it’s time for predictions. I’ll give my predictions on the usual stuff like Stanley Cup winner, Hart Trophy winner, etc. but I’ll throw in some fun ones for kicks.

Northeast Division Winner: Boston

Even without Thomas they are solid in net with Rask. They are deep up front and on D. These are still the big bad Bruins. The rest of the division is improving, but still not close to the Bruins caliber.

Atlantic Division Winner: New York Rangers

The Penguins are the sexy pick with a seemingly unstoppable Malkin and a healthy Crosby. However, I think the Rangers will repeat as division champs. They have arguably the best goalie in the league, a solid defence that for the most part remains in tact and now add Rick Nash to the mix and this team is downright scary.

Southeast Division Winner: Washington

New coach, new Ovechkin? Can Adam Oates make this team an offensive powerhouse again? I think he will and I like Braden Holtby in net. They will get a strong push from an improved Carolina team though.

Central Division Winner: Chicago

The big question mark for this team is in net, but with any resemblance of solid goaltending will be a huge bonus for a team stacked with firepower and solid defence. Jonathan Toews is the Mark Messier of his generation.

Pacific Division Winner: Los Angeles

Really going out on a limb here eh? How can you bet against this team though? They can score, they can beat you down and they have a top tier goalie to shut you out.

Northwest Division Winner: Vancouver

They are still the best in this division, but the rest of the division is catching up fast. Minnesota blew the bank on Suter and Parise, Edmonton has the best young talent in the league, Colorado is also full of young up and comers…Calgary…well…they still have Iginla.

Eastern Conference Winner: New York Rangers

C’mon now, would Bettman and his cronies have it any other way? Not saying the NHL is fixed, but having the Rangers in the final would be a dream for the NHL.

Western Conference Winner: Chicago

Yeah I’m not picking my Canucks. I just can’t this year with them not having a 2nd line for the first month or two of a short season. The Hawks are dangerous up front, have arguably the best leader in hockey, arguably the top defensive pairing in the league and a coach desperate to win after two early exits the last 2 seasons. They are primed to win it all but…

Stanley Cup Winner: New York Rangers

Rick Nash proves to be the missing piece that pushes the Blue Shirts over the top in a tough 7 game series with the Hawks.

Hart Trophy: Steven Stamkos

Vezina Trophy: Tuuka Rask

Rocket Richard: Steven Stamkos

Art Ross: Steven Stamkos

Lady Byng: who cares

Calder: Someone other than Nail Yakupov

First player to get injured: Simon Gagne

I was going to go Sami Salo but I’m thinking the warm Florida weather some how helps his glass body

First coach to be fired: Mike Yeo

Firing a coach in the middle of a shortened season is just mean. I doubt it will happen, but if one were to go I’d say Mike Yeo in Minnesota. If he can’t deliver with all the money the owners dropped he’s done.

Biggest disappointment (player): Ryan Suter

Big time pressure with ridonk contract and now no safety net without his longtime running mate Shea Weber. I like the guy, but tough for anyone to live up to that contract.

Biggest disappointment (team): Pittsburgh

Labelled by many to be the team to beat and rightfully so with two of the best players in the world on the team. However, I don’t think they are deep enough or strong enough on the back end to outlast teams like the Rangers or Bruins.

Most improved player: Ryan Getzlaf

Not sure what happened last year, but 57 points from a player of his caliber has to be an outlier. Expect more of a point per game pace this year.

Most improved team: Edmonton Oilers

The main core of youngsters have been building chemistry the entire lockout. I’m thinking they make a huge leap and make the playoffs as a 7 or 8 seed this year.

Biggest injury issue this year: Groin pulls

Concussions have been the main injury concern for the last few years, but I’m thinking we are going to see a lot of groin pulls/tears this season. With some players not being in the best of shape to start the season and no pre-season games to warm the muscles up…riiiiiiiiiiiip.

Biggest Surprise (player): Roberto Luongo

Yeah I’m a Lu lover for life, but we all know Lu will somehow, someway come back to haunt Vancouver one day. So I’m thinking once he does get shipped out he somehow screws us over in a big way. Maybe beating us in a big game to deny us a premium playoff spot, maybe Schneids gets injured soon after he leaves and were left with an unproven back up and miss the playoffs, maybe he beats us in the playoffs and urinates on the Canucks symbol at centre ice…either way we deserve it.

Player most likely to be suspended first: Zac Rinaldo

This guy is craaaaaaaaazy. I think he’s apt to just remove one of his skates one day and start chopping

Canadian teams that make playoffs: Canucks, Oilers, Leafs

Canadian team that does the worst: Habs

First goalie to lose his starting gig: Ilya Bryzgalov

He may get lost in the forest for good this time.

Player with most goals will finish with: 39

Player with most assists will finish with: 40 (Henrik Sedin)

Player with most points will finish with: 65

Will Jerome Iginla be traded: No, Flames too stubborn to do what’s best for franchise

When will Luongo be traded: After the Leafs/Flyers start the season off cold as ice…I say 7 games in

When will PK Subban be signed: After the Habs start 0-3 and Kaberle starts the season -12

Most valuable fantasy player: Henrik Lundqvist

Goalies are fantasy gold. You draft him and you can guarantee yourself a top tier finish

Puck drops in 40 minutes.

I’m jacked.

Sal’s Top 5 Sports Stories of 2011

My final post of 2011. It’s been a great year for me personally and I’m looking forward to making 2012 even better. I made a few resolutions for 2011 and I hit them all. I ran my first full marathon, I completed P90X, got a new job and started a blog. I’m having a hard time picking goals for 2012, but I’m sure I’ll figure something out in the next few days. Anyway, enough about me. I’m going to end 2011 with a short review on my top 5 sports stories of the year. I know there have been many stories to choose from, but this is my list and if you have another top 5 feel free to share them in the comments section. Have a safe and happy new year! All the best to you and your families for 2012.

1) Vancouver Canucks Stanley Cup Playoff Run

This many people crammed in a small space...probably a bad idea

There was an unreal buzz in downtown Vancouver during the long Stanley Cup playoff run by the Canucks. I live right in the middle of downtown Vancouver so I experienced the mayhem after each game. I will never forget game 7 against the Blackhawks. The nervousness we all felt watching that game was amazing and the yelling and cheering that lasted all night was incredible. Of course it all ended badly as the Canucks lost game 7 at home and we all know what happened after. I was walking down Granville after game 7 and left just in time before the tear gas started. A dark night, that has forever scarred this city.

2) The St. Louis Cardinals winning the World Series

The Cardinals played the best 3 months of baseball I’ve ever seen. Coming back from a double digit game deficit late in the year to make the playoffs was a ridiculous feat in itself. They followed that up by beating the World Series favourite Phillies on the road against the best pitcher in baseball. The improbable feats continued in the World Series where arguably the best game in playoff history took place in game 6 with the Cardinals coming back twice while being down to their final strike of the season. It was a season that you couldn’t script any better in Hollywood. It was also an end of 2 eras in St. Louis with Tony La Russa riding off into the retirement sunset and Albert Pujols becoming a gazillionaire with the Angles via free agency.

3) Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers

Aaron Rodgers is the best QB in the NFL

The Packers led by arguably the best QB in football have been dominating the competition in 2011. They started off the year with a Super Bowl win and continued their winning ways in this year’s regular season. They almost went a full year without a loss going undefeated from Dec. 19, 201o to Dec. 18, 2011. Aaron Rodgers has solidified his place among the best QB’s in the game with MVP type numbers: 4643 yards, 45 TD, 6 Int, 68.5% comp. pct and 122.7 QB rating. The Packers are the favourites to win it all again this year and it looks like the only thing that can stop them is themselves.

4) Sidney Crosby and Concussions in the NHL

Will Sid the Kid have to retire early if his concussions continue?

The biggest story in the NHL season is the absence of the best player in the league Sidney Crosby. Crosby was able to return for a few games, but after a seemingly insignificant bump has now found himself in the press box again suffering from lingering concussion symptoms. There is a significant fear in hockey circles that possibly Crosby may permanently be hampered by concussion symptoms. Crosby means so much to the league and having him not playing is a loss for all hockey fans. Crosby may be the best player not playing due to a concussion, but there have been many others that are missing time or have missed time due to concussions: Chris Pronger has been lost for the season and possibly for his career, Shea Weber, Jeff Skinner, Simon Gagne, John Michael Liles, Colby Armstrong, the list goes on. Many people have offered potential solutions to the ever growing problem including the re-addition of the centre red line, bigger ice surface, softer pads, better helmets, more clutching and grabbing, no touch icing, etc. Unfortunately, there is no easy solution.

5) Lokomotiv Plane Crash

(AP Photo/Misha Japaridze)

Tragedy struck on September 7 when the entire Lokomotiv KHL hockey team was killed in a plane crash. Several former NHL players were on board including the head coach Brad McCrimmon. I attended a pre-season Canucks game shortly after this crash and there wasn’t a dry eye in the place after an emotional video montage was played highlighting each player killed in the crash. The Lokomotiv team plans on playing in the KHL again in 2012-2013.

2011-2012 NHL Predictions

Who’s pumped for NHL opening night tomorrow? I’m still shaking off the stanley cup hangover…or crying fest…whatever it may be. I left my season predictions to the final possible moment, mostly because my time has been sucked up by prepping for hockey pools. Ok, so lets do this. If you hate my picks…good, its too easy if you just let it happen all the time :)

Western Conference

(P) – Makes playoffs

Central Divison

1) Chicago (P)

2) Detroit (P)

3) Nashville (P)

4) St. Louis (P)

5) Columbus

This division is shaping up to be the toughest in the Western Conference. My projected last place team Columbus is no pushover either especially with their additions of Carter and Wisniewski. The battle for first in this division will be tight, but I’m giving it to the younger Blackhawks who will be hungry to get back to the elite tier after a Cup hangover like season. Nashville seems to always be there in the end and with Rinne they should be. St. Louis looks stacked offensively, they have 3 solid lines that can fill the net. However, keeping the puck out of their net will be the key as they are relying heavily on 2 very young d-men in Pietrangelo and Shattenkirk to soak up tons of ice time.

Northwest Division

1) Vancouver (P)

2) Minnesota

3) Calgary

4) Edmonton

5) Colorado

The Canucks should take this division again in a cake walk. The defending Western Conference champs have the luxury of playing in the weakest division in the conference. Their depth will be tested a bit in the beginning with injuries to Raymond, Kesler and Rome; however, there’s enough depth here to keep them ahead of the pack. Minny will look to newcomers Heatley and Setoguchi to provide the offensive punch that this team seems to lack in year in and year out. I see the Wild sniffing around the 8th seed, but just miss out when all is said and done. The Flames are an ageing bunch and I wonder how long it will take before Flames fans cry out for a blow up of the roster. I don’t see them blowing the team up and instead I see them riding out the ageing stars to another missed playoff run. Edmonton is loaded with top level prospects and the addition of Captain Canada Ryan Smyth will help in the continued development of the youngsters. Their time is coming, but the youngn’s still need to take some more lumps before they can start challenging for the post season. The Avs gave up the most goals in the league last year and it could happen again. They have some young talent as well, but their defence has holes and their forwards are small and lack grit. The Avs may challenge for the #1 pick in next years draft.

Pacific Division

1) San Jose (P)

2) LA (P)

3) Anaheim (P)

4) Phoenix

5) Dallas

The Sharks come in as the favourites in the Pacific yet again. It’s the same story with the Sharks, we’ve seen what they can do in the regular season, but it’s in the post season where they’ve fallen flat. This lead to the shake-up to their big 3 with the shipping away of Heatley. We’ll see in May if this shake-up was enough. LA turned some heads in the offseason when they were able to acquire the Flyers’ captain Mike Richards. Richards will give Kopitar some long awaited help up the middle and I think the Kings push the Sharks all the way to the end of the division title. The Ducks have a big 3 of their own and all 3 are in their prime. Selanne coming back for another year adds some much needed secondary scoring and the return of Hiller between the pipes makes the Ducks a scary team. Phoenix dodged relocation this off-season, but these talks will likely resurface this year. Phoenix lost their stud goaltender Bryzgalov to Philly and now have serious question marks in the net with Mike Smith and Jason LaBarbera. The Coyotes lack firepower (their projected #1 centre is Daymond Langkow) and will likely challenge Dallas for last in the division for much of the season. Dallas lost their best player in Brad Richards to the Rangers and as we saw last year, without Richards they struggled. Their top line of Eriksson, Ribeiro and Morrow is solid, but after this their is quite a drop off. One thing to watch is the return of Sheldon Souray to the NHL.

Overall

1) Vancouver

2) Chicago

3) San Jose

4) Detroit

5) LA

6) Anaheim

7) Nashville

8) St. Louis

Western Conference winner: Vancouver, c’mon, who do you think I would pick?

Eastern Conference

Atlantic Division

1) Pittsburgh (P)

2) Philadelphia (P)

3) NYR (P)

4) New Jersey (P)

5) NYI

The Penguins tied for first in the division even with their best player being out for half the year and their 2nd best player also injured. Malkin is back and Crosby is looking like he’ll be back at some point this year. The Pens are strong up front, on d and in net, they are my pick for Eastern Conference champs. Philly shocked the hockey world when they dealt away 2 of their best players in Richards and Carter. However, I think their pick up of Bryzgalov is the bigger deal. This finally….finally, gives them a bonafide #1 goalie. They’ll push the Pens all season long. Brad Richards is yet another big ticket free agent pick-up by the Rangers. He joins another high priced talent in Gaborik to make one of the scariest one-two punches in the league. The Rangers have arguably the best goalie in the league and solid depth up front. It’s on the backend where the question marks lie. My pick for New Jersey to make the playoffs is insane I know, but they were one of the best teams in the league in the 2nd half of the season. They really suffered with the loss of their now captain Parise early in the year. With a healthy Parise back and also a healthy Brodeur, they’ve got a solid shot as anyone to squeak in. The Islanders aren’t completely laughable. They have a lot of young exciting talent: Taveres, Okposo, Grabner, Moulson, Harmonic. They also have a name brand goalie in Nabokov manning the pipes. Mark Streit also returns to the line-up after missing all of last season. They may shock the world this year…ok maybe not yet…but soon.

Northeast Division

1) Boston (P)

2) Buffalo (P)

3) Montreal

4) Ottawa

5) Toronto

The defending champs (it hurts saying that) are virtually the same team this year. I’m not going to talk about them anymore…their good…that’s all I’m going to admit. Buffalo went wild and went on a shopping spree this offseason. The shopping has given them solid depth up front and on d, add this to their superstar goalie and you have a playoff team. The Canadians will rely heavily on Carey Price this year and I’m sure he’ll have a great season, but adding just Erik Cole to their small forward line-up just doesn’t seem like enough of an upgrade to scream playoff contender. Will Markov play? If he is 100% this team has a shot at the playoffs, without him it’ll be tough. Ottawa was pure awful last year, but I see them bounce back this year as last year they had poor goaltending and injuries to key offensive players. Both of these issues are no longer issues to start the year and I see the Sens being a much better team this year. Oh the Leafs…do I have somewhat of a negative bias here…maybe…but really I am just looking at the facts. Reimer played extremely well to close out the year, but as the #1 guy at the get go, can he repeat his performance for a full year? Can Tim Connolly stay healthy? Too many question marks for my liking.

Southeast Division

1) Washington (P)

2) Tampa Bay (P)

3) Carolina

4) Winnipeg

5) Florida

The Caps added some great pieces in the offseason. Vokoun gives them a clear cut #1 goalie, Brouwer and Ward add some grit and size and Hamrlik adds some experience to balance out some of the young d-men. I see Ovie having a monster year…maybe a hart trophy type year. The Lightning look to build on a solid season a year ago and will be lead by their superstar youngster Steven Stamkos. Victor Hedman is becoming a solid #1 d-man and Rollie the goalie will keep them in games all year. Carolina will again be in the mix for the 7th or 8th seed this year. They kind of remind of a Phoenix of the east, always sniffing around the playoff picture with an underwhelming line-up. Welcome back Winnipeg Jets! I think this team will be fun to watch because it’s looking like they’ll be in a lot of high scoring games. Just not enough depth up front to challenge. The Panthers are a lock for last place in this division. Jose Theodore is the starter in net…’nuff said.

Overall

1) Washington

2) Pittsburgh

3) Boston

4) Tampa Bay

5) Buffalo

6) Philadelphia

7) NYR

8) New Jersey

Eastern Conference Winner: Pittsburgh, Sidney returns and pushes his team over the Caps.

Stanley Cup Winner: Vancouver in 7. 41 years of futility ends this year. Riots turn into an extreme hug-a-thon on the downtown streets. Luongo wins Conn Smythe…but fans cheer for Schneider until bitter end.
