What’s up with the ‘Nucks?

Tonight is game #20 for the Canucks and they find themselves in familiar territory; first in the Northwest. However, it’s not like they’re running away with the division. The wild sit just 2 points back and the Oilers just 4 back. After winning 6 straight from January 30 to February 12 the Canucks are just 2-5 since.

So what has gone wrong in the last stretch? This is Vancouver, so naturally let’s take a look at the goalies first. During the 6 game win streak the Canucks were being spoiled with Vezina Award winning performances by the goalies. In the 6 game win streak the goalies gave up more than 1 goal in a game only once. In the 7 games since, the goalies have given up 3 or more goals in all but 1 game and that was against a horrid Nashville offensive attack.

So this looks pretty simple from the above evidence, it has to be the goalies…

However, I don’t think it is. I think the lights-out goaltending was carrying this team earlier and masking the team’s shortcomings. The Canucks are seen as one of the deepest line-ups in the league and I believe they still are. However, being deep and being loaded with talent are 2 very different things. The Canucks seem to be back to where they were in the days of Bertuzzi, Naslund, and Morrison  where they would rely too much on the top line and pray to the ice gods that they would get some secondary scoring. The Canucks have a bunch of useful forwards that many teams would love to have, but they don’t have many forwards who can consistently put the puck in the net or at least create some chances.

2nd line centre? shudder

2nd line centre? shudder

Don’t get me wrong, I love the likes of guys such as Hansen, Higgins, and Kassian but do any of those players scream out offensive dynamo to you? Ryan Kesler poses some offensive threat, but even when he has been somewhat healthy he hasn’t looked close to the 40 goal scorer he was 2 years ago. With Kesler latest injury it looks like Mason Raymond slips into the 2nd line centre role…barf in my mouth. The Canucks have great speed and for the first time in ages have fairly good size and grit; however, they are sorely lacking playmakers, snipers and danglers (NHL video game styles). It’s all good to get the puck deep and get a hit in on a d-man, but once you get the puck below the goal line you need to be able to do something with it other than passing it to the point and pray for a seeing eye single through 6 bodies and into the top corner of the net.

With the lack of secondary scoring the Canucks rely on their back end to chip in with some offense, particularly Alex Edler and Jason Garrison. Edler has been steady with 12 points so far, good enough for 3rd in team scoring. However, Garrison has been downright dreadful. Garrison was paid big bucks for his booming shot and was expected to be a force from the point on the PP. Unfortunately he hasn’t been able to get on track with his slapper and has found himself off the PP on many nights. Garrison’s struggles may be a reason the perennial top tier PP in the league sits at 12th best so far.

If only he could hit the net with that shot...

If only he could hit the net with that shot…

There are other leaks that need to be plugged up such as a PK unit that sits at 21st in the league, a once top 5 faceoff team now sitting at 22nd in the league, 2 superstar goalies trying to be the man yet neither seem to want to be, a defenseman in Alex Edler that needs to start showing he can be a #1 d-man night in and night out…yikes this is getting depressing so I’ll stop.

With all the above evidence I paint a bleak picture for the Canucks, but all hope is not lost. When you have a stud goalie you always have a chance and the Canucks have 2. The Canucks still have the best offensive duo in the league (yeah yeah that’s slightly biased) and have a strong back end that should be able to shut down any team. However, they are going to need to find some form of secondary scoring because we all know come playoff time the Sedins will be on lock down against guys like Keith, Seabrook, Doughty.

So Gary What You Gunna Do for me?

So Gary’s sorry…yeah he damn right should be and so should all the NHL owners and the players. As I mentioned in my previous post I can’t wait to see what kinds of PR moves the NHL will try and pull post lockout. Gary says in the video above the league wants to make it up to the fans. So this post is about what I think the league should do to make us feel good about hockey again. I’ve read other articles and posts from fans and their wish list of post lockout gifts such as free tickets or free beer. In all honestly free shit is just never going to happen. Anyway, here’s my list, feel free to add in you ideas in the comments.

1) Team autograph and photo day

I lived in Edmonton from Age 5-7 and it was when the Oilers were in the middle of their dynasty. Every year the Oilers would have an autograph day where they would spread themselves all over West Edmonton mall and fans would have to go find the players to get autographs and pictures. It was always easy to figure out where Gretzky was since the line was hours long. I think teams around the league should all do a day such as this and let pervy cougars grope the players in photo opps or let old granny’s pinch their cheeks, etc. They deserve a little punishment…they’re big boys they can handle it.

Full contact autographs and pictures. Get ready Hank I'm sending my mom after you.

Full contact autographs and pictures. Get ready Hank I’m sending my mom after you.

2) A 3 day merchandise sale

The teams reap huge rewards off us suckers buying jerseys, hats, foam fingers, etc. Give back to the fans by doing a 72 hour sale. I’m thinking 50% would never fly, but I might consider dropping some cash if it got to at least 25% off and my purchase of over $100 gave me a free Canucks beer mug as well or maybe a Lu bobblehead (soon to be a collector’s item).

Come on...for 25% off you'd consider it

Come on…for 25% off you’d consider it

3) Gary Bettman comes to every arena at some point in the season to do a public apology before the game

I think it’s only fair for Gary to let us boo and possibly throw waffles at him at least once this season. This may appease some of the fans who can only get over the lockout with some form of mental abuse or violence.

Not sure why there's a pantless girl next to waffles...

Not sure why there’s a pantless girl next to waffles…

4) Monster discount on NHL Centre Ice TV package

This probably would never happen, but why not give a monster discount…I’m talking 50% for subscriptions. The league may get some suckers who fall in love with the package and end up paying full price for it next year.

5) ****(this is from the wife) Free back rubs from a player of her choice

Yeah I ran out of ideas and I asked the wife what she would want. Naturally a much studlier man rubbing her down was her choice. I see how it is…I see.

Give Your Refresh Button a Rest

The most ludicrous lockout in the history of professional sports continues. The mid January deadline for salvaging a season is mere days away. Many die hard hockey fans around the globe…I mean Canada …have their work web browser locked onto a Canadian sports news site and are secretly refreshing the page every 5 minutes in hope of finally seeing the headline “Hockey is Back.”

Time theft as the boss would call it.

You reading this post at work? Thief

You reading this post at work? Thief

We’ve only thus far been focused on the greedy players, ruthless owners and the forgotten fans. However, what I’ve really come to realize is how much this lockout has exposed how ridiculous our country’s sport media coverage is. Obviously I’ve known the coverage is and always will be hockey dominated. Although, I didn’t think the coverage would still rely so much on hockey with little to nothing of substance to report on the subject on a day to day basis.

I want you to think about it. Think about the last few months. How many ground breaking developments have really come out of this labour dispute? Here is the lockout in a nutshell: the owners have a, b, c, d issues they will “die on” and the players don’t like them. The players threaten to dissolve their union, the league says go ahead and do it. The owners compromise, the players counter compromise, the owners think about it and see if they can squeeze a little more out…such exhilaration continues until both sides sign a piece of paper.

sign_here

Sounds familiar right? However, all of us hockey suckers are bombarded on a daily basis with “breaking news” developments from the lockout. The latest being the players being upset at a comment Gary Bettman made that some GM’s regret some of the contracts they made and wish they could have a way to get rid of these contracts. Is that really news? It’s obvious to anyone with a pulse that there have been some preposterous contracts in the past and also obvious that likely the GM’S who made these deals wish they could have a mulligan.

Wade Redden...whoops

Wade Redden…whoops

I feel bad for the hockey reporters and experts that are being asked to constantly report on this fiasco. To keep viewers and readers, any little story/event/action/statement is built up to be something much bigger than it really is. What’s tomorrow’s Earth shattering tweet going to be? “Bettman picks nose while looking at Fehr, NHLPA furious at disrespectful dig, may disclaim…”

I respect these reporters and I understand they too have families to feed and are just doing their job. I do look forward to their expert opinions/insights as to the winners and losers of the CBA once the deal has finally been struck. However, until that time, why get mentally abused by this emotional rollercoaster the media is putting you through when there are so many other exciting sports you can watch. So stop constantly refreshing those browsers and maybe give some of the following a gander.

The NFL playoffs start this weekend and feature exciting matchups including a matchup of 2 of the most exciting, athletic QB’s in the league in Russell Wilson of the Seahawks and RGIII of the Redskins.  If you want to cheer for younger athletes, how about tuning in to the remaining NCAA college football bowl games especially Monday’s championship game featuring powerhouses Alabama and Notre Dame. You don’t like football? Well how about checking out the rejuvenated NBA with storylines a plenty including 2 teams people love to hate in the Lakers and the Heat, emerging powerhouses the Clippers and Thunder and an all of a sudden red hot Raptors team.

Yeah it sucks hockey is not around, but there’s so much more out there to take up your household chores time. So grab those remotes, quit watching re-runs of Gossip Girl with the wife and take back the TV.

Get Your Hockey Jerseys Out…

and shat on them, all over them.

Most of you have read today’s “breaking news” that the NHL has made a new offer to the players and hockey in 2013 is just a few signatures away.

Ridiculous.

Really, it shows just how much these millionaires care about you fans. I thought the NHL’s last offer was the final offer with issues that were “hills they will die on” Well miraculously, the NHL has moved off their death hills and has started to…wait for it…compromise.

These might be hills worth dying on...

These might be hills worth dying on…

This latest offer screams out to me that the owners have and had little to no intention of cancelling the season.  It shows there are no hills their dollah dollah bills will die on.  Why wait this long to start real negotiations? Why couldn’t this of started ages ago? Why? Because they knew to get the best deal you have to make the other party panic and poop themselves. Unfortunately for Bettman and the Zillionaires it appears Donald Fehr does not take poops. The owners have realized this constipation is going nowhere soon and are now trying to feed the players a nibble of a laxative.

Not sure if anyone else has likened union solidarity with constipation beforeCHRIS YOUNG/THE CANADIAN PRES

Not sure if anyone else has likened union solidarity with constipation before
CHRIS YOUNG/THE CANADIAN PRES

Now we will watch the back and forth press conferences where each leader will try and paint the other leader as Satan. And then magically mid January both sides “regretfully” agree on a new deal. The owners will claim they compromised and moved away from their death hills for the love of the fans.  The players will say they sacrificed so much because they just couldn’t live comfortably with their Bentley’s knowing little children would go a cold hard winter without watching the neutral zone trap.

Please come back fans. By the way, you like my car?(Paul Hunter/Toronto Star)

Please come back fans. By the way, you like my car?
(Paul Hunter/Toronto Star)

I can’t wait to see the amazing PR campaigns the league and players will roll out after the CBA is signed. The hockey starved suckers will fall for all the garbage hard and will gladly fork out over a hundred bucks for tickets to watch their ice gladiators battle it out for a sip of Lord Stanley’s teat.

I’m angry because I am one of those suckers and I can’t help it.

I don’t want to come back, but I know I’m weak…so pathetically weak.

I hate you NHL…

hate you

you hear me Gary Bettman and Sidney Crosby? Hate…wait does that mean the hockey pool draft is on then? Damn it

Just End it Already

It’s day 90 of the most annoying lockout in sports history. Annoying because this time around the NHL lockout isn’t over a mind blowing fundamental shift like going from a non-cap to a salary cap system. Instead the deal breakers are max contract lengths, the duration of the agreement and some mumbo jumbo about buyouts and caps on escrow.

I just don’t get why it’s really that difficult to come to an agreement where once side says 5 years and the other says 8? How about 6, or 7? Obviously I’m oversimplifying the whole thing, but it just doesn’t look like the sides are that far apart. The daily press conferences and columns suggest otherwise though. My favourite was Gary Bettman’s near tears elementary school rant after failed negotiations last week. Basically he looked like a kid on the playground who’s feelings have been hurt and just doesn’t want to play anymore.

Today’s news brings more doom and gloom with the players apparently ready to vote on disclaimer of interest. Basically this is the first step in moving towards decertifying the union and filing a lawsuit against the NHL…

Yawn…I just don’t give a flying f#$k anymore.

The owners are ridiculous because they put themselves in this mess by dishing out stupido contracts they couldn’t afford.

Bettman is a nard hole because he overexpanded this league to stretch not only the talent pool thinner than my overused jockeys but also ruined any hope of this league making any money by thinking the dirty south would embrace the dirty north’s game.

The players are dingleberries because they are fighting for the rights of the elite and not really for the Prust’s, Westgarth’s and Parros’ of the league. Do you think these types of guys really care about 5 year or 10 year contracts.

This league is more dysfunctional than my bowels after I’ve ingested my 3rd venti americano of the day.

If Bettman and his crew are serious about dying on hills over their demands, then stop dragging us fans through the mud giving us false hope and just cancel the season. I wish I could say I’m going to boycott hockey when they eventually come back, but unfortunately it’s like porn…you say you’ll never watch it again, but you just can’t stop.

NHL Lockout Rant

I’ve tried to stay away from this subject this summer because it pisses me right off. However, with the supposed September 15 lockout date getting ominously close I just can’t hold back any longer. If you are a regular reader of my blog you know I am a die hard hockey fan, so of course I am one of the suckers that will still come back to watch games even after another useless lockout. However, I can’t guarantee the same will be true for the casual or new fan of the game. The game itself is nearing disaster in my opinion with the state of play last season being the boringest hockey I’ve seen in years. I’m not the only one snoring, Stanley Cup final ratings this year were the lowest since 1995 even though the final showcased teams from the largest metropolitan areas in the US. A lockout would only further hurt viewership in the US and thus affect the bottom line. Ironically enough it is this bottom line or more so the sharing of this bottom line that is at the forefront of the labour dispute.

I don’t feel sorry for either side in this dispute. In fact I want to slap each side in the face.

On one side you have multimillionaire/billionaire owners who are trying to scrounge back as much of their money as possible. While on the other side you have millionaire athletes who get paid millions to play a game for a living. The owners are trying to scale back revenue sharing to a 50/50 split with the players, while at the same time controlling salary cap inflations from year to year. Not surprisingly, the players want more of the revenue pie (57/43) and less salary cap constraints. Really? Is a 50/50 split really that difficult to achieve? What lifestyle changes would this create for the players? Would they now go from a 45,000 square foot mansion to 40,000? A Bentley from a Rolls Royce? C’mon now! As for the owners, trying to scale back the salary cap because salaries are out of control is no fault but your own. Tossing out 15 year, 20 year multimillion dollar deals is obviously not the players fault. The financial system the NHL currently has is a joke. It forces smaller market teams to overspend to keep or attract players. What this does is put small market US teams in inevitable financial ruin, while other teams who refuse to blow their motherlode squander around aimlessly with C-level talent.

If you haven’t already, go and read Michael Grange’s article on how to fix this lockout. I agree with every suggestion he provides. I especially like his suggestions on capping the number of years a team can sign a player to 4 years max and contracting 2 franchises and moving 2 others to Canada. As I said earlier, the double digit year contracts are ruining this league. The league can no longer rely on owners to be responsible enough to not make these awful deals. A strict rule needs to be in place to prevent owners from being dumbasses. Contracting franchises and moving 2 other weak $$$ making teams to Canada makes sense. Doing this would cut out the money leaking franchises and instead increase the revenues for all the remaining teams which means more $$$$$$ for all. However, we all know these seemingly common sense solutions will likely never happen.

I have to admit I’m not too optimistic about the prospects of the league avoiding another lockout. I’ll be royally pissed, but on the bright side it will give me more time to focus on football pools and US college sports…oh…and my wife :)

Is the Dead Puck Era Back?

What type of hockey do you prefer? Offensive hockey with chances at both ends, speed, skill, etc. or defensive hockey that features countless blocked shots, low scoring games, little flow through the neutral zone? I myself enjoy offensive hockey, I like to see the speed, the slick passing, the odd man rushes, etc. I’m obviously not alone because we’ve all seen what happened when the ‘dead puck’ era was around in the mid 90′s and early 2000′s. The offensively challenged hockey of those times led to the NHL adopting rule changes to free up the superstars and increase scoring. The rule changes worked for several seasons after their implementation. 50 goals and 100 points were reachable goals again and scoring was up all over the league. However, the goals have started to dry up again as teams have started to deploy defensive schemes to quell scoring. This defence first philosophy appears to be the way to go in the current NHL as the final 4 teams left in the Stanley Cup Playoffs play with a defence first mentality.

Is Mike Smith really Vezina quality or is the dead puck era back?

The players who have benefitted the most from the decrease in offence are obviously the back stoppers. Mike Brophy posted a great article on the lack of scoring in the NHL and suggested that possibly the great years by goalies such as Brian Elliott and Mike Smith are products of their teams defensive systems rather than new found skill. I tend to agree with Brophy on this subject with the goalies. If the above two goalies were playing in Vancouver, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia or San Jose would they still have Vezina caliber years? It would be hard to convince me that they would.

It’s apparent coaches have adapted to the new rules and have mastered ways to squash scoring. Players also seem to have found ways to get away with just enough obstruction to slow the flow down without taking a penalty. So what’s next for the league? Do they just leave things be and accept the fact that defensive hockey is here to stay? The suggestions have been flying in from all over: bring the red line back, no glove passes in your own zone, icing on PK, bigger nets, bigger rinks, etc.

Ratings may be up in the US for hockey these playoffs, but this likely won’t last if the league slips back into a dead puck era. Fans come to the rink to see the likes of Ovechkin, Stamkos, Crosby, Sedin dazzle with their skill, they don’t pay hard earned cash to watch Dan Girardi block 14 shots in a game and watch 2 good scoring chances per game. At least I wouldn’t anyway. I’ll of course stubbornly continue to watch no matter how non-exciting the product on the ice is. Here’s hoping the big wig executives can figure out a way to modify the rules again to give us at least another 4-5 years of offensive hockey before the smart coaches figure it out again.

Patrick Kane’s stats have fallen each of the last 3 seasons. Hard to be Superman in the current NHL

Canucks Post Mortem

It feels like a bad dream for Canucks fans today. A day after their beloved team was kicked to the curb in 5 short games by the 8th seeded LA Kings. There was so much hope and energy in the city before the playoffs began. It was going to be a story of redemption… of vindication. The Canucks were supposed to be hungrier than ever to get back to the finals and claim the cup they were 60 minutes away from hoisting last year. Bars and restaurants were stocking up their liquor supplies getting ready for a long playoff run. Well all those hopes and dreams were quickly dashed. The Kings deserved to win the series. They were the better team in all facets of the game. The series was really over after game 2 when the Canucks dropped the opening 2 games on home ice. Winning 4 out of the last 5 games was going to be a struggle for any team let alone a team that struggled to score.

The warning signs of possible future failure were all around in the last 20 or so games of the season. The signs were just masked by a 2nd straight President’s Trophy. I admit I overlooked the struggles down the stretch because the team was still winning games 1-0, 2-1, etc. The thought was, the offence will come around in the playoffs. Well it never came. Many of the secondary scorers on the team including the likes of Kesler, Booth, Higgins and Raymond all struggled to score down the stretch and this continued into the playoffs. The injury to Daniel Sedin hurt the team badly, but good…great teams can overcome big injuries and still succeed. The much talked about goalie hullaballoo was not a factor for the Canucks in this series. Luongo and Schneider both stood on their head.

Naturally the question is what next? 2 straight President Trophy winning teams has equaled no Stanley Cup. Obviously something isn’t working. The one thing we all know is one of Luongo or Schneider will be traded. Luongo is the leading candidate to be traded as it appears the team, coaches and fans are fully behind Schneider. The benching of Luongo in games 3, 4 and 5 all but seal the exodus of the franchise leader in almost every goalie category. It won’t be easy to trade Luongo, he holds all the power with his no trade clause. His contract is also difficult to move and other teams know this and will provide a much smaller return than what the all-star goalie is worth. Trading Schneider would net a much larger return, but I don’t see Luongo coming back after what he went through in the playoffs and what he went through from the fans and media this year. Another team is going to get a steal of a deal in acquiring Luongo and I expect to see him flourish wherever he goes. I’ve been a big Luongo supporter throughout his stay here and I appreciate all that he gave for this city. It’s not often you get a yearly Vezina calibre, gold medal winning, all-star goalie suiting up for your team night in and night out. The city was spoiled and instead of cheering for the guy they shat on his face.

How about the coaches? The radio waves were jammed today with callers demanding for the firing of the coaching staff. For me personally, I feel AV and his staff should be given another chance to get this team back into contention next year. All AV has done during his time here in Vancouver is win. However, I won’t argue with those who feel the opposite way because there are valid points on why the staff should be fired. If AV does get fired, can you imagine what the next coach would think…2 straight President’s Trophies, a Stanley Cup final appearance, countless division titles…damn I better be amazing. Whatever the choice is, it should be made and announced immediately. If there is to be a new coach, the new coach should be given as much time as possible to prepare for the upcoming season. There is a Mike Gillis press conference scheduled for 10 am tomorrow so I’m sure the answer will be known soon.

How about the back end? Alex Edler’s struggles were spotlighted nightly by broadcasters. Earlier in the season there was talk about him being in the Norris Trophy discussion, but down the stretch his game started to falter and he was not able to fully recover his game in the playoffs. I still feel he will be a solid defender, but he’s not ready to be the #1 guy yet. Other than Edler the only sure things are Bieksa and Hamhuis. The bottom 3 defenders may look a lot different next year. Sami Salo continued his solid play this season, but he has likely played his last game with the Canucks due to his age. That leaves the likes of Ballard, Tanev, Alberts, Rome and Gragnani…yeah…obviously some defensive help will be needed, especially a defender who can be the PP QB.

Up front I already mentioned the lack of secondary scoring. The Canucks went from a high octane offensive juggernaut into an offensively challenged team that lacked any scoring creativity. Ryan Kesler was the most disappointing of all the Canucks forwards. His magical season of a year ago was nowhere to be found this year. Granted he was coming off major surgery and the longer offseason can only help him get stronger and faster. However, expecting him to reach 41 goals again is a stretch. 25-30 goals is more realistic and in the current NHL 25-30 goals is still an upper echelon type season. Kesler needs some help on the 2nd line. Specifically someone who can pass the puck. He and David Booth are not passers, but rather guys who like to have the puck and drive to the net. The chemistry of putting the two Michigan boys together never materialized. The bottom 6 forwards has some nice parts in Hansen, Malholtra and Higgins. Zack Kassian will be given ample opportunity to solidify his spot on one of the checking lines. He’s still young at 21 years of age and it’s much too early to call him a flop.  Max Lapierre played well for the Canucks this year, but the Canucks have enough yappers and not enough punchers…he may be the odd man out along with Sammy Pahlsson. As for young upcoming prospects, Jensen and Schroeder will likely push for roster spots next year and I feel of the two Jensen has the better shot.

In the end, I feel there will be a much different looking roster heading into next season. It wouldn’t surprise me to see a shocking deal involving some of the core a la what Philly did with the jettison of Mike Richards and Jeff Carter. It all starts tomorrow with Mike Gillis’ press conference. This summer should be full of action not only for the Canucks, but for other veteran laden superpowers that were ousted early: Detroit, San Jose, Pittsburgh and Chicago. October 2012 can’t come soon enough.

Haters Still Gunna Hate?

If you missed last nights Vancouver Canucks vs. Detroit Red Wings game you missed the game of the year in the NHL so far. The game had it all, big hits, big saves, beauty goals, feistiness, you name it. With the win the Canucks are now 1 point out of the Northwest Division lead. It’s likely we will see them take over the lead as early as Friday as they face a Flames team they have dominated over the last few years. The win last night also has shut the mouths of the notorious Canucks haters for at least a week. These same “fans” were calling for the trading of their #1 goalie for any price including a used bag of pucks and a few half eaten Tim Horton donuts. I want to ask those “fans”…what now? Still wanna hate? Still think Luongo should have stopped those 2 goals he let in last night because Cory Schneider would have obviously stopped those 2 unstoppable shots? It’s time to look in the mirror wearing your $300 Canucks jersey, raise your right hand and swiftly sack yourself as hard as you can. As I predicted here, the mini hot streak Cory Schneider had was going to light a fire under big Lu and we were about to see a dominating streak of play from the #1. Well that streak is in full effect now as Lu is 7-0-1 in his last 8 starts, including a shut out.

The hate has cooled for at least a couple games.

I can’t give Lu all the credit for the Canucks recent hot play: the Sedins are rolling on all cylinders, Kesler is back being a dominating force in both ends of the ice, Bieksa and the Hammer are locking down top offensive units, Raymond and Hansen are burning up the wings creating all sorts of chances, the PK and PP are back to elite levels, the face-off dot is being owned by the centres, Salo somehow is staying fairly healthy, it goes on and on and on.

The Canucks will win the Northwest, there’s no doubt there. Their true obstacle will eventually be another match up against their hated playoff rivals the Chicago Blackhawks. We’ll have to wait 4 or so months for that to play out, but until then enjoy the Lu hot streak.

The Kid’s Back

Please no one hit him...

The long awaited return of hockey’s best player is happening as I type this. You’d think Crosby would have some rust with being out of the NHL for almost a year…umm, yeah, he’s destroying those thoughts right now. He has 4 points in his return including 2 goals. If he gets a hat-trick I’m going to do something reckless…not sure what this is right now, but something that will definitely anger the wife. Crosby’s return tonight was the most anticipated return since one of his mentors Mario Lemieux made a comeback in 2000. Weirdly enough the score in that comeback game was the same as in tonight’s game.

There are many other star players in the NHL, but no one comes close to the star power of Sidney Crosby. He is the most important player in the game, not just talent wise, but also marketing wise. He is the face of the NHL and all the players in the league know he is the most important player for the growth and future of the game.  Hell, maybe Ovechkin hasn’t been playing well (to his standards anyway) because he wasn’t being pushed by his division rival and fellow king of the NHL competitor. We all had a feeling Crosby would eventually come back, but I’m sure many thought it would be sooner. Crosby had said all along that he would not come back until he was 100%. For those conspiracy theorists out there, do you think Bettman and the other owners had anything to do with delaying his return? Maybe they wanted to take every precaution necessary to ensure their prized possession was completely healed? Bah, who cares, all that matters is that the kid is back.

So how is he going to do the rest of the year? I’m going to go with somewhere in the region of 70-75 points (61 games left). The Penguins were already on top of the league before his return and now with a healthy Crosby they have to be the favourites to win the East.

Looks like the game just ended and no hat-trick for Crosby…saves me from doing something dog-house worthy.
