Short and Sweet

The month of March has been wild so far. We have NFL free agency in beast mode, March Madness destroying brackets all over the world, the final push for the playoffs in hockey and the boys of summer starting to stretch it out in spring training. I really want to write about all of these things, but I’m going to keep it short and sweet.

Peyton Manning

Tebow needs a new job. AP/Greg Trott

The monster move of NFL free agent frenzy went down today with Peyton Manning heading to the Broncos. I’ve always been a fan of Peyton Manning. I enjoy his quirky antics before the snap where he’s calling plays at the line of scrimmage based on his mad reads on the defence. He combines his unmatched smarts for the game with an accurate cannon. Yes, it is true he’s had 4 neck surgeries and there is no guarantee he will physically be as dominant as he once was. However, what up and coming team wouldn’t risk it to land a 4 time NFL MVP who before last season was considered to be in the midst of his prime? The Broncos are now legitimate contenders for the AFC West crown as they already have a stout defence and with Manning they now will have a more balanced offensive attack. Of course Manning’s arrival means Tebow time has ended in Denver and likely will be starting up somewhere else. The best fit in my opinion is in Miami. Tebow is a God-like figure in the state of Florida and Miami is desperate for some excitement to bring fans into the stadium.

Brackets Busted

…at least my bracket is ruined that is. Don’t get me wrong, I chose a lot of upsets, but unfortunately I picked all the wrong upsets. Enough about my feeble picks. The sweet 16 match-ups I’m really looking forward to are: Syracuse vs. Wisconsin, Louisville vs. Michigan St. and Baylor vs. Xavier. I like the underdogs in each of those match-ups. Ohio St. is growing on me as is Kansas. Ok, if I had to re-pick my winner I’d have to go with Ohio St. Fade appropriately…

The Canucks Limp to the Finish

It’s still ok…really…still not panicking. Check in with me on this subject in 2 weeks…I bet there will be no issues at that time…there better not be anyway.

The Blue Jays Look Strong

I’m going to be doing a series of Blue Jays posts very soon. I going to try and keep my giddiness in check…BUT DAMN THEY LOOK GOOD.

NFL Week 3 Recap…IM ON FIRE

13-3? I should go pro

Wow, I will probably not have a better week than this week with my weekly NFL picks. I went 13-3, but I think I should be 14-2 (greedy? Yup). If you were watching the Green Bay and Chicago game you saw a late game punt return touchdown by the Bears get called back due to a holding call. The announcers were boggled as to where the penalty happened and even did multiple replays to show there was no penalty anywhere to be seen. A little shady if you ask me, maybe Vegas called into the league to get some help :) Naturally I would fade my picks next week because the universe always corrects itself in the world of betting and I’m bound for a drubbing next week.

As usual, rapid fire recap bullets…pop pop pop

  • The biggest news of the week by far is the Bills upsetting the Pats. They end a brutal 15 game losing streak against the Pats and they did it coming back from a 21-0 deficit. It looks like the Bills are on their way to crushing my initial predictions. The defence will give up their points, but it looks like their offence is dare I say…scary?
  • The Lions had a big comeback of their own, coming back from 20-0 down to win in OT. This was their first win in Minny since 1997! Bills and Lions SuperBowl…that would be amazing…crazy and delusional, but amazing.
  • Seriously, Megatron cannot be stopped when healthy. He catches everything
  • If the Eagles can’t figure out their O-Line woes they’ll miss the playoffs and Vick won’t last half the year
  • I think I jinxed Kenny Britt by saying how good he was last week
  • Darren McFadden looks like the best RB in league right now…not named AP of course
  • Drew Brees made Houston’s D look like last year’s Houston D
  • I think Miami wins the Andrew Luck sweepstakes and Sparano doesn’t last the year
  • Atlanta looks in trouble, the D is weak and Michael Turner does not look like the same runner. Their in tough to make the playoffs this year
  • Jermichael Finley may be close to passing Antonio Gates for best TE in the league. I’m not sure if Gates will ever be able to stay healthy again.

Locker Vs. Newton, Who’ll be better?

I apologize for the awful music in those videos. The top 2 QB’s taken in this past draft got their feet wet in NFL preseason action this past week. They both played well, Newton went 8-19 for 134 yards leading two field goal scoring drives while Locker went 7-10 for 89 yards including a 45 yard TD pass. Naturally this has me thinking, who will end up being the better QB when all is said and done.

Obviously Newton has the better athleticism and explosiveness, but Locker appears to have an edge when it comes down to coachability, attitude and ability to be a leader in the locker room. Cam Newton played in a un-NFL like system where it was a one read, not open, ok lets just book it kind of scheme. So Locker might have the edge in adjusting to the pro-offense quicker. However, Newton has the big play ability where in any single play he could bust out a 60 yard run or bomb a deep TD pass off his back foot. Both of these guys come with some accuracy concerns so no advantages to either there. In regards to the road to the starter role, Newton has a clearer path than Locker (Clausen vs. Hasselbeck). However, that’s not necessarily all a good thing. Locker can sit and learn behind a proven vet in Hasselbeck and be eased into action, whereas Newton likely will take over from Clausen early in the season (maybe even be the starter right away) and fly by the seat of his pants.

It’s a tough choice, but I think I’m going to go with Locker in the long run. Cam Newton has superstar potential, but with QB’s I’ll take the one with the better maturity and leadership intangibles. Just take a look at Mike Vick and Vince Young as recent examples. I rest my case.

So vote above and tell me why you picked who you did.

Tale of 2 Lockouts

Could these 2 lockouts be any more different?

I don’t think I’ve talked to anyone who thinks the NFL will be locked out for the upcoming season. Even though the wheeling and dealing has been going on for months, no one expects the talks to fail.
