Breakin’ the Bank…CHA CHING!

* Explicit lyrics in video below…prrrrrrrrrrrat

Mike Vick is riiiiiiich after signing a 6 year, 100 million dollar deal. As the song says, first you get the money, then the muthafu#@$% power, then the muthafu@#$#$ respect. Vick has the 1st part down and I’ll give him the 2nd, but I’m sure he doesn’t have most people’s respect yet. After all big $$$ deals the first thing people ask…is the guy worth it? To help you answer this question, here are what his other rich QB brethren are making (yearly salary averages, salaries taken from http://www.spotrac.com):

Mike Vick with Philadelphia

Image via Wikipedia

Aaron Rodgers – 10.8 mil

Tom Brady – 15.7 mil

Peyton Manning – 18 mil

I consider the above 3 to be the top 3 QB’s in the league right now. Vick is now more baller than all but Peyton.

How about some other top tiered gun slingers:

Philip Rivers – 14 mil

Sam Bradford – 13 mil

Ben Roethilsberger – 12.8 mil

Matt Ryan – 12 mil

Matthew Stafford – 12 mil

Drew Brees – 10 mil

(I have a wee inkling that Mr. Bradford will end up being the top cheese of this group in the next few years, he looks like the real deal.)

Now back to the question in hand, is Vick worth his weight in gold? I say…PAY THE MAN. Yes he has a checkered past, yes last year was his first as a starter since 2006, yes he is prone to injury, but who else can do what he does? The guy is a threat to pass for 3000 yards and rush for 1000 yards, no other QB can put those combination of numbers up. However, a strong argument would be that he hasn’t won a Super Bowl yet so he doesn’t deserve to be paid like other Super Bowl winners (just for fun, Eli Manning’s avg. salary is 15.3 mil). Ok Ok, I hear ya there, but with the other additions the Eagles have made this offseason its looking like the Eagles are one of the favourites to win it all. So lets put it to a vote shall we…

Back up your reasons for your choice in the comment section below.

A lot happens in a week

I just got back from a much needed vacation. The wifey and I did a whirlwind tour of Seattle, Portland and the Oregon Coast. We tried to stay as disconnected from the world as possible (no IPhones, no TV). It felt good just relaxing and enjoying life with little stress from the real world…So naturally as soon as I walked in our front door I turned on the TV to see what I missed in the world of sports :) Looks like I missed a lot. It’s kind of daunting and intimidating trying to get back into writing about sports because I feel like I’m completely out of the loop.  However, I’m sure it won’t take long for me to get going again, I’ll just try and slowly work my way back into a groove.

One of the stories that I missed that sticks out the most is the Blue Jays trading Aaron Hill and John McDonald to Arizona for Kelly Johnson. The Diamondbacks did well in getting McDonald to solidify shortstop since they lost Stephen Drew in July and getting Hill for Johnson is basically a push since both are pending free agents and both are struggling. I’m not surprised about Hill being traded, the writing has been on the wall for quite some time. I’m pretty sure Johnny Mac will be back with the Jays next year so my sadness on losing him is temporary. If Johnson has a good 5 week stint with the Jays he likely will re-sign. He’s just a stop gap and likely not the long term solution at 2nd base. I’m thinking something will be done with either Lawrie or Hechavarria to convert one of them to be the 2nd baseman of the future.

Anyway, that’s enough for today, I have to devour a week’s worth of sports articles to get up to speed. Oh and for the ultra geeks out there…I’m downloading this tonight…no I won’t tell you how I’m getting it 3 days earlier than expected…I need to have as many online advantages as possible :)

Baseball vs Hockey Fans

Just got back to my hotel room after watching the Blue Jays at Safeco Field. Watching the Jays in Seattle has become an annual ritual for me and the wife. As per usual there were a bunch of other Jays fans in the crowd. Usually we end up sitting In a section surrounded by other Jays fans. Tonight though we were surrounded by Mariners fans.

It was entertaining not only because the Jays won, but it was also fun listening to the Mariners fans around me give their ‘expert’ baseball opinions. Maybe I was wrong to assume that because I was in the States the people should know more about baseball. It really was no different than watching a Canucks game back home. You know the people Im talking about. The people backseat coaching/commentating from the stands the entire game, but mostly giving the absolute wrong advice/commentary. The people screaming ‘shoot’ during the powerplay when there’s no one in front creating traffic or no shooting lane to the net.

Yeah it was no different at Safeco tonight. I was laughing my ass of at the guy behind me who was baffled with each Morrow strikeout because he felt Morrow had nothing special. Umm, the guy was throwing 98 on the outside corner. The same guy was also convinced Morrow purposely hit Casper Wells in the head and he wanted blood. Yes, Morrow defintely wanted to bean someone to load the bases with 2 outs to bring the possible tying run to the batters box. Another lady behind me was furious at a fielding error by the Mariners 3rd baseman. She went as far to proudly yell if she was paid as much as him she could have made the play. By the way, this woman barely fit in her seat so yeah good luck getting down to field those balls lady.

I know fans pay good money to watch live games so they have the right to say what they want. I just wish the kind of fans I talked about earlier realize that no one cares what they would have done in that at bat/shift because the true fans want to just watch the game. If they wanted to here someone natter about each play they would have stayed home and watched on TV.

Locker Vs. Newton, Who’ll be better?

I apologize for the awful music in those videos. The top 2 QB’s taken in this past draft got their feet wet in NFL preseason action this past week. They both played well, Newton went 8-19 for 134 yards leading two field goal scoring drives while Locker went 7-10 for 89 yards including a 45 yard TD pass. Naturally this has me thinking, who will end up being the better QB when all is said and done.

Obviously Newton has the better athleticism and explosiveness, but Locker appears to have an edge when it comes down to coachability, attitude and ability to be a leader in the locker room. Cam Newton played in a un-NFL like system where it was a one read, not open, ok lets just book it kind of scheme. So Locker might have the edge in adjusting to the pro-offense quicker. However, Newton has the big play ability where in any single play he could bust out a 60 yard run or bomb a deep TD pass off his back foot. Both of these guys come with some accuracy concerns so no advantages to either there. In regards to the road to the starter role, Newton has a clearer path than Locker (Clausen vs. Hasselbeck). However, that’s not necessarily all a good thing. Locker can sit and learn behind a proven vet in Hasselbeck and be eased into action, whereas Newton likely will take over from Clausen early in the season (maybe even be the starter right away) and fly by the seat of his pants.

It’s a tough choice, but I think I’m going to go with Locker in the long run. Cam Newton has superstar potential, but with QB’s I’ll take the one with the better maturity and leadership intangibles. Just take a look at Mike Vick and Vince Young as recent examples. I rest my case.

So vote above and tell me why you picked who you did.

RIP Rick Rypien

Sad news today, former Canuck tough guy Rick Rypien found dead at age 27. No word yet on what the circumstances are around his passing. He was a favourite of mine because he didn’t back down to anyone. He was small for a fighter and often took on guys much bigger and more often than not he won (The Hal Gill fight above is just ridiculous). He will be missed.

The Kids Are Alright

If you’re a Jays fan you must be drenching yourself in urine out of uncontrollable excitement these days (probably too much). Brett Lawrie has energized his teammates and he’s making the media and fan base go ape. He might annihilate my initial predictions. Yesterday’s performance was man crush making material: clutch hitting, stealing bases, solid defence (that dual double play rundown he started was throw-your-TV-remote-off-the-balcony worthy). He’s not the only youngster that is making believers out of TO fans. Eric Thames (24 years old) has shaken off his batting woes and is back to driving the ball in the gaps and out of the park, Colby Rasmus (25 years old) hasn’t been tearing the cover off the ball (.220 avg), but has been making D in centre field look Devo easy, Henderson Alvarez (21 years old) makes his 2nd start tonight and is coming off a solid major league debut against Oakland. The top 3 in the starting rotation Romero (26 years old), Cecil (25 years old) and Morrow (27 years old) are solidifying themselves as solid front end of the rotation chuckers. Add all of these youngsters to vets like Bautista, Lind and Escobar and you have a pretty bright future indeed.

There are also future stars in the minors:

1) Travis d’Arnaud 22 years old: catcher, AA stats: .326, 17 HR, 61 RBI

If he can play some D he may give Arencibia a real push in the next few seasons. ETA: 2 years

Photo by Nick Laham/Getty Images North America

2) Adeiny Hechavarria 22 years old: shortstop, AA and AAA combined: .242, 6 HR, 46 RBI

It’s not his bat that will make him $$$. His glove is said to be unreal and if he was in the bigs right now he’d be considered in the top tier in fielding. I wonder if the Jays would consider moving him to 2nd base in the minors to groom him to take over for Aaron Hill in the future. ETA: 2 years

3) Kyle Drabek 23 years old: starting pitcher, not going to list his AAA stats because they’re awful

He had a cup of coffee with the Jays earlier in the year and walked way too many batters to be effective. It looks like he continues to struggle with control in the minors. He has explosive stuff so expect to see him back in the bigs next year. ETA: probably will get a September call-up this year

Photo by Darren Calabrese/The Canadian Press

4) Deck McGuire 20 years old: starting pitcher, A and AA combined: 3.06 ERA, 9-5, 121 k’s in 123 innings

11th overall pick in 2010, rising fast through minors. Big fastball, hard slider, front end of rotation type prospect. ETA: 2 years

Photo from Sportsnet.ca

5) Anthony Gose 21 years old: outfield, AA stats: .257, 13 HR, 50 RBI, 52 SB

As you can see his main attraction is his blazing speed. The Jays’ outfield is pretty crowded right now (Bautista, Rasmus, Thames, Snider). A trade or 2 might open up a spot for Gose at some point. ETA: 2 years

The Jays are trying to build a long term winning franchise by being stacked in every position in the minors. This is the only way they can hope to challenge the beasts of the east who can spend unlimited funds to reload their line-ups every year. If I had to predict, I’d say the Jays will be in playoff contention in 2 years, but will actually finally make it in 3 or 4 years.

V-Dub Returns: To boo or not to boo?

Vernon Wells makes his first visit to Toronto since the big offseason trade to the Angels. When you think of Wells the first thing that comes to mind is the monster $126 million contract he was signed to in 2006 and the related fallout that came from it. It was thought that he would be a Blue Jay forever as it was thought no other team would be brave/sane enough to take on his massive contract. However, the Angels shocked the baseball world by not only trading for Wells, but also agreeing to take on the remaining $86 million he is owed. The trade is widely felt to be the best move by any general manager this past offseason. Ask any Jays fan about the trade and you’ll never be able to wipe the grin off their face.

Sorry Vernon...Love ya!

It will be interesting to see what kind of reaction the fans give Wells tonight. In my opinion I think they should give him a standing ovation. It wasn’t like he was a player wanting out of the city and just playing out the string (ahem, Vince Carter). He loved Toronto and was active in the community. The man cried when he was traded for god’s sake. He never played to the level that one would expect a $100 million dollar player to play to, but he wasn’t a bum. 3 all-star games, 3 gold gloves and 20 or more home runs in 7 of his 9 full seasons with the Jays is pretty solid. He’s now in a pennant race for the first time in his career and I think Jays fans should be happy for him. Here’s hoping they show a tear inducing video montage of him before the game showing plays like this…

However, memories aside, I’m hoping he K’s 4 times today against Morrow to keep my slim fantasy playoff hopes alive :)

Thursday, feels like a good day to do some pollin’

With only 45 or so games left the MLB yearly award races are getting tight. Lets put it to a vote shall we?

My vote is with Justin Verlander. Tied for first in wins, first in K’s, 3rd in ERA and a no-no against my Jays (obviously he out cheated the Jays that game). I threw James Shield’s into the poll because he’s quietly having a stellar season. He has 8 complete games thus far…I think that’s more than some teams entire staffs.

Has to be Doc right? 1st in wins, 3rd in ERA, 4th in K’s, 1st in complete games. Kershaw is a close 2nd in my opinion, such a good record on an awful team makes him that much more studly.

This one will be tight to the finish. I’m going to go with Granderson. I think he will lead the AL in jacks when all is said and done. Voters dig the long ball.

First of all…Lance Berkman? Where did this come from? Second of all, I have 2 of these guys on my fantasy team and I won’t be in the league playoffs. Somebody’s cheating. Anyway, enough babble. My NL MVP is Reyes. He probably won’t win, but I think he should. He leads the league in average, 2nd in steals, 2nd in hits, all while missing 18 or 19 games and counting due to his fragile hamstrings. The Mets can’t score or win without him.

…and just for fun

Phillies or Red Sox right?  That’s boring, I’ll go with the Texas Rangers. They made it all the way last year, so they definitely know what it takes to get there.  We all know they can utterly destroy the baseball so it all rests on their starting pitching. Can they get enough from Wilson, Lewis, Ogando and Harrison to make it to their scary bullpen? If they can they have a shot because their bullpen is lights out. Oliver, Uehara, Adams and Feliz, that is one sick late inning party. So I’m going to go with Rangers Vs. Phillies in the final. Rangers in 7.

Blue Jays Unveil Another Young Stud to Their ‘Cheating’ Line-up

Photo From David Cooper/Toronto Star

Henderson Alvarez makes his major league debut tonight for the Jays. He arrives hot on the heels of another prized prospect Brett Lawrie. He’s less hyped than Lawrie, but from reports like this you can see why there is excitement surrounding this 21 year old pitcher. As I type this he is just about to enter his 4th inning of work against the A’s. I can definitely see why the Jays are excited about this kid, he has electric stuff. So far he’s showcased a fastball in the mid 90′s with a ton of sink, a change up in the mid 80′s and a tight 79-80 MPH slider. His fastball and change look like plus pitches, but I think the slider needs some more work.  I was quickly reviewing his stats in the minors and I’m surprised he doesn’t strikeout more batters especially if he can hit triple digits with his heater. However, watching him tonight it looks like his style of pitching seems to be pitching to contact rather than pitching for punch outs. Another thing I notice is his poise on the mound. His body language is positive and he looks relaxed considering the situation. He seems to have an idea of how to ‘pitch’, moving the ball in and out, taking a little off the fastball when he needs to and pumping up the heat to 95+ when he wants. All in all a solid debut by Alvarez.

In other Blue Jays news today, a story released by ESPN today claims the Blue Jays have been cheating during home games by using a fan in the stands to steal signs.  Reportedly there is a fan in the outfield relaying signs to the batters on what pitch is coming. C’mon man, really? Obviously the guy can’t see the signs from where he’s sitting, so supposedly he’s receiving ear bud transmissions from another covert op in the stands? Wow, I guess that’s why JP Arencibia and Aaron Hill are barely hitting above .200. I really don’t see the point of the article. To me it seems like the writers read the quotes from the Yankees when they were in T.O. claiming the Jays were cheating and just jumped on the wagon desperate to get attention from a ‘cheating’ scandal expose. Dustin Parkes has an insightful article showcasing some of the shortcomings of the stats used in the ESPN article. Also click here to listen to one of the writers defend the article.

I’m not saying the Jays are completely innocent from cheating, hell, most of the teams in the league are guilty of it one way or another. Cheating in baseball is not new either, there’s been cheating in baseball probably since the game was created. Even my team cheated when I was in high school. If we thought we had a pretty good read on the catcher’s signs we would employ a really simple code. If it was a fastball coming the coaches or runners on base would cheer for the batter using their number (i.e. lets go 1-8). If it was a breaking ball we would cheer for the batter using their name. We never got caught and it worked really well.

I don’t think any investigation or punishment will be placed on the Jays from this article. The players, the coaches, even the commissioner knows stealing signs happens all the time. It’s up to the catcher and pitcher to develop a set of signs that are difficult to read. If they use easy to read signs, well too bad, they deserve to get owned. I think as a joke  and as a big F-u the Blue Jays should give out white t-shirts to all fans in the outfield and have them all do crazy arm gestures and signals when the Jays are at bat.

NFL Futures, lets make some $

Does that video get you pumped? It gets me going so much I started to look into how I can blow some money I don’t have on football. This may be the best time to put in some NFL future wagers if your thinking some dog’s might have their day. Lets start with…

Super Bowl Winner:

New England 6-1

Green Bay 6-1

Philadelphia 15-2

San Diego 10-1

NY Jets 10-1

Pittsburgh 11-1

Atlanta 14-1

Indianapolis 14-1

Baltimore 16-1

New Orleans 16-1

Dallas 18-1

The top 3 are obvious favourites, but I’m liking the value on powerhouse teams like Indy, NO and Pittsburgh. Atlanta is also intriguing at 14-1…so tempting. My extremely early Super Bowl prediction is the Jets Vs Packers with Rex Ryan annoyingly taking the victory. 10-1 eh…

NFL MVP

Peyton Manning 4-1

Tom Brady 9-2

Aaron Rodgers 5-1

Drew Brees 7-1

Mike Vick 15-2

Chris Johnson 10-1

Matt Ryan 12-1

(Im skipping a bunch of QB’s)

Maurice Jones-Drew 14-1

Adrian Peterson 15-1

The majority of the favourites are QB’s and this is to be expected as the last 4 MVP’s have been either Peyton Manning or Tom Brady. LaDainian Tomlinson was the last non-QB to win in 2006. There’s little value in this category unless you roll the dice and go with a RB. I like Adrian Peterson at 15-1. You know he’s going to get an unreal amount of carries this year (click here to read my post on AP predictions for this year). The favourite though has to be Rodgers.

Individual Team Win Totals

Buffalo 5.5 (over -105) I know this team’s bad, but I think they are good for 6-7 wins this year. Offence is decent with Steve Johnson and Lee Evans out wide and Fred Jackson and CJ Spiller in the backfield. The defence was horrendous last year against the run, but should be somewhat better with Marcell Dareus in the middle of the d-line.

Kansas City 8 (over -105) They won 10 last year and I think they can do it again this year. The offence is explosive with home run hitters Dwayne Bowe and Jamaal Charles. The defence is young, but showed some promise last year. Eric Berry is a superstar in the making.

Cincinnati 5.5 (under -105) This team is going nowhere. An awful team in a tough division. Is Carson Palmer going to play or retire? They won 4 last year, so I don’t really see how they are that much better this time around. If the total was 4.5 I’d take the under.

* Odds for all taken from Sportsinteraction

That should satisfy your pigskin appetite for now. Think I missed any possible value or disagree with any of my picks above? Let me know.
